Introduction to the programme

Would you like to work with environmental chemistry?

In the Master’s programme Chemistry + Environmental Biology you will work with organic and inorganic chemistry, analytic and environmental chemistry, eco-toxicology, population and system ecology and biological resource management.

You will acquire knowledge of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, quantum chemistry, spectroscopy, biological chemistry and physical chemical methods.

You will also learn about biological populations and ecological communities, the interaction between elements, chemical compounds and organisms, the role of and interaction between equilibrium, redox and other chemical reactions in biological processes and organisms. You will gain an insight into environmental factors and environmental chemistry’s relevance to organisms, the dynamics of biological resources and human impact on the environment.

The programme will provide you with the skills to identify, formalise, analyse, evaluate and solve problems within chemistry and environmental biology independently or in cooperation with others. You will learn to understand, develop, implement and evaluate experimental studies, simulations, reasoning or evidence or proof, and to understand, develop, apply and evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative models within the subjects.

You finish the programme by writing an interdisciplinary master thesis and you have the possibility to write it as an experimental 60 ECTS master thesis during 3. and 4. semester.

Career

The programme offers you a wide range of job opportunities in, for example:

  • Public or private research and control laboratories
  • The environmental health and safety sectors
  • The chemical industry
  • The education sector
  • Consultancies with focus on environmental chemistry

The master programme also qualifies graduates to admission to a PhD programme.

Applicants with other bachelor’s degree than those listed as qualifying for admission

If you hold another bachelor’s degree than the ones mentioned in this document, you can still apply for admission to the master’s programme. In order to gain admission you must have a relevant bachelor’s degree with qualifications corresponding to one of the bachelor’s degrees qualifying for admission. When you have applied, the university will assess the academic content of your bachelor’s degree. If the university assesses that your bachelor’s degree is relevant and gives you qualifications that correspond to one of the qualifying degrees, you may be offered admission. If the university assesses that your bachelor’s degree is relevant for admission to the master’s programme which you have applied for but that you lack few essential qualifications, the university may decide that you have to complete prerequisite studies amounting to no more than 30 ECTS points in order to be admitted. You must complete prerequisite studies before being enrolled in the master’s programme.
