Civil and Architectural Engineering at KTH

This master’s programme is aimed to give you advanced knowledge in the field of Structural Engineering as well as within the subjects of Civil or Architectural Engineering. The students will be able to implement this knowledge with a holistic view of buildings and infrastructure as advanced technical systems. The programme starts with fundamental, compulsory courses before moving into elective and more advanced-level courses.

There are two main tracks in the programme: Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering. The Civil Engineering track is devoted to techniques for designing, constructing and maintaining roads, streets, railway track, bridges and tunnels. The Architectural Engineering track is concerned with the engineering design and analysis of buildings with an emphasis on system-level performance and in a lifecycle perspective. The teaching methods are a mix of lectures, exercises, industry project work and laboratory work. During the education, the programme interacts with industry in many ways. One way is through project work in cooperation with experts from industry, and another is the involvement of experts from industry as teachers.

The programme ends with a degree project which should relate to an issue within the field, focusing on the investigation and analysis of a problem. This is also an opportunity for students to interact both with industry and current research.

Students in the programme will gain:

  • Strong ability to develop and design buildings and infrastructure with regard to human conditions and needs, and society’s objectives for economically, socially and ecologically sustainable development.
  • Strong ability to communicate with different audiences in English and/or in Swedish, orally and in writing. This includes the ability to discuss and promote results and findings. This is achieved through oral and written presentations throughout the education.
  • Awareness of societal and ethical aspects, including economic and social issues and ecologically sustainable development.

This is a two year programme (120 ECTS credits) given in English. Graduates are awarded the degree of Master of Science. The programme is given mainly at KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Architecture and Built Environment (at KTH).

Topics covered

Designing and constructing of roads, streets, railway track, bridges and tunnels, foundation engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, structural engineering, concrete structures, steel and timber structures, building materials, indoor climate and energy, environmental aspects of the built environment.

Specific requirements for the master’s programme in Civil and Architectural Engineering

A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in a field related to Civil Engineering. In addition, applicants are required to have at least 20 ECTS credits in mathematics, including linear algebra, multivariate analysis and statistics.

A fundamental knowledge in

  • Numerical Methods and/or programming equivalent to 6 ECTS credits
  • Building Mechanics, equivalent to 7,5 ECTS credits
  • Structural Mechanics, equivalent to 7,5 ECTS credits
  • Geology and Geotechnology, equivalent to 6 ECTS credits
  • Building Materials, equivalent to 7,5 ECTS credits
  • Building Physics (heat- and moisture transport), equivalent to 7,5 ECTS credits is required.

Fluid Mechanics and Hydrology are prerequisites to certain courses of the curriculum.
