Become one of the people designing the digital products and services of the future
Digital technologies play a significant role in all areas of life. Modern societies need professionals with thorough understanding of how to design and develop user-friendly, innovative and sustainable products and services and engaging ways to interact with various technological devices.
Master degree studies in Human-Technology Interaction (HTI) offer a broad set of studies in human-computer interaction, digital systems and related fields. In the HTI studies, you will get up-to-date know how on digital service design, user experience evaluation, user psychology, human-centered software development, usability engineering, multimodal human-computer interaction and research skills.
From a technological viewpoint, the studies cover the design and development of user interfaces for mobile and desktop applications, virtual reality, augmented reality, industrial machinery and human-robot interaction. HTI is a multi-disciplinary field and you will work with the professionals from several areas with different perspectives. In a very international atmosphere, you will also work with the members representing different cultures, and you will learn about cross-cultural design.
In a broader sense, you will learn how technology affects people’s lives and how to design efficient, engaging and ethical digital products and services. The degree leads you to hands-on work in various course projects, as well as provides basics for scientific thinking and writing.
Human-Technology Interaction (M.Sc.) track and Human-Technology Interaction (M.Sc. Tech) track are two of the seven tracks in the Master’s degree programme in Computing Sciences, a new degree programme starting in August 2020.
Technology plays an increasing role in our daily lives, and it is important to have professionals who have deep understanding of how to develop efficient and enjoyable ways to interact with a wide variety of technological devices.
Students can deepen their knowledge in course units that cover a wide range of topics from user experience and emotions to innovative use of facial behavior like gaze and expressions, touch, speech, and human physiology in user interfaces. The programme leads you to scientific thinking and writing as well as to hands-on work in various course projects.
HTI master’s studies have a direct link to HTI research carried out at Tampere University. There is a wide range of multidisciplinary research into technology-mediated novel ways of interaction with devices, digital environments and people. HTI research groups at Tampere University explore and develop more intuitive user interfaces for the future. The aim is to match the design of new technologies with human abilities and needs – targeting at the best possible user experience with technology.
The contents of Human-Technology Interaction (HTI) studies are similar in both HTI tracks (HTI M.Sc. and HTI M.Sc. Tech). There are differences in other parts of the degree, the HTI (M.Sc. Tech) track being more technical. Please check details from the curricula of these tracks.
There are many job opportunities to choose from after graduation, such as user interface developer in different industrial sectors, user experience and interaction designer or service designer of new digital services and products, and usability and customer experience specialist. Naturally, you will get abilities to proceed towards a research career. Career opportunities are excellent and human-technology interaction specialists are highly appreciated by industry.
Many work opportunities are available for graduates of this programme. Some of the possible future careers include working as:
- Interaction designer who studies people in their natural environments and creates technology and UI designs
- User interface developer who has the skills to implement advanced front-end software solutions
- Usability and user experience specialist who makes sure that the technology designs are easy to use and fit human purposes, or
- Product manager with emphasis on user needs and user experience.
Following the successful completion of the programme, HTI graduates are also eligible to apply to doctoral programmes in Finland and abroad.
Eligibility criteria in the Master’s degree programmes consist of two parts: Tampere University’s general eligibility criteria, and programme-specific eligibility criteria, which specify and/or add information to the general criteria.
