The programme enables the student to develop the knowledge and skills required to work as an independent dance artist to high international standards.

By means of individual specialisation and teaching, the programme focuses on developing and stimulating the student’s unique artistic identity as a critical and creative performing dance artist.

The programme consists of performance work, workshops, dance training, lectures, analysis and individual tutorials, and is conducted in a challenging, stimulating and supportive environment. One of the aims is to equip students with experience that underpins their physical idiom with a foundation of theoretical reflection, enabling them to strive for and contribute to challenging artistic statements and new perspectives within the art of dance.

Through their work on this programme, students establish contacts with professional work environments in Norway and abroad.

The programme prepares the student to pursue and further develop a professional career as an independent freelance dance artist, as well as to seek engagements in relevant dance companies.

With an intake of just a few students each year, major emphasis is placed on close individual tutoring and supervision, and on adapting the programme’s content to individual needs.

This is a two-year full-time programme.

The programme entitles students to apply to the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme and other relevant doctoral programmes.

Master’s in dance

The Master’s degree programme is based on a three-year Bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS) in dance or other relevant education. Applicants must document a minimum of 80 ECTS in dance-related and performative subjects. Applicants with a lower content of dance-related or performative subjects in their degree may also apply for admission if they can document practice/ work experience that demonstrates they have attained a corresponding scope and level in regard to the programme.

In exceptional cases, other documented qualifications may be approved as wholly or partially equivalent to the educational requirements specified above.

Applicants must document their proficiency in English, for example through a TOEFL test with a minimum score of 500 or an IELTS test with a minimum score of 5.0 (or similar documentation). Applicants who document an educational background from another Nordic country or from an English-language country do not need to submit further documentation of their proficiency in English.

When applying, you must submit 1) a letter of motivation and 2) videos uploaded on Vimeo (or similar service) featuring your performances.
On the basis of your application, you will be notified as to whether you will be called in for an audition and interview.

In advance of the audition, the invited applicants will be asked to prepare a performative work (max 5 minutes) and to write a text in English.

Further information will be provided directly to the applicants who are called in to the audition.

The admission process will be based on an overall assessment of the applicant in regard to:

  • their description of and reflection on practising as an independent, artistic dancer
  • expressiveness, individuality and creativity within dance
  • technical skills within dance
  • motivation
  • personal suitability

The auditions will be held on 7–13 February 2019.

The final decision will take place following an overall assessment based on the admission requirements being met, your skills and suitability as a dancer, your personal motivation and your audition.

The curriculum for the Master’s degree programme is currently being revised and will be finished by 2019. You will find a link to this curriculum in the general information on the programme.
