The two-year Master’s Degree Programme in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication (120 ECTS)  prepares students to teach foreign languages to children and emphasizes early age intercultural communication competence.

The general strength of the programme is generated by its didactics and methodology relying upon a balanced combination of theory and practice to be used in a future work as a teacher or educator. The programme facilitates gaining a multicultural view on educational issues and sharing personal/collective experience in intercultural settings. The programme prepares its students to effectively tackle challenges and possibilities arising from globalisation, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity.

Degree structure

The programme consists of altogether 120 ECTS divided into: Orientation Studies (6 ECTS), Major Studies (92 ECTS), and Other Studies (22 ECTS).

Orientation studies (6 ECTS)

Orientation studies provide students with the useful tools indispensable for successful completion of the courses included in the curriculum. They familiarize students with the University of Eastern Finland, present the core of the Finnish educational system in general, as well as introduce the main learning objectives, content and evaluation criteria of the ELEIC programme.

Major studies (92 ECTS)

Major studies aim at deepening students’ academic skills related to research methodology in educational sciences. They also prepare students to plan and execute their research activities related to the topic of their Master’s thesis. As one of the main aspects of the ELEIC programme is communication in various international settings, major studies include as well obligatory courses fostering students’ ability to act as an English speaking professional teacher or educator.  Content studies, constituting an integral part of the major studies are dedicated to the pedagogical viewpoints of language teaching and learning processes. The emphasis is laid on theoretical and practical aspects of working with/for children. The content studies are oriented towards theory and practice of teaching foreign languages to young learners, current pedagogical and educational issues, innovative pedagogical solutions, as well as teaching and professional practice.

Other studies (22 ECTS)

Other studies may include any university-level courses that serve to deepen students’ expertise related to the topic of their master’s thesis or personal interests.

Admission

Number of places

The programme will accept 10 students.

Application period

Application period: 1 November 2018–31 January 2019 15.00 (GMT+2).

Eligibility

A recognized Bachelor’s (or Master’s) degree in the area of education or foreign languages, or equivalent, is required. In addition, applicants must have studies or work experience in the field early language education.

The programme will accept a temporary degree certificate. The temporary degree certificate is issued as a replacement for the actual degree certificate in case the latter cannot be given to student immediately after the studies have been completed due to technical or administrative reasons. The temporary degree certificate should include the same information as the actual degree certificate. The programme will accept a temporary certificate only if all the studies included in the BA degree have been successfully completed.

The programme will conditionally accept applications from persons who will not have graduated by the time the application period for the programme ends. The conditional applicants are required to indicate their anticipated graduation date in their application and submit an officially certified copy of their last transcript of records by the end of the application period. The conditional applicants must submit their final degree certificate and the final transcript of records to the programme coordinator by 9 August 2019.

English proficiency

Minimum requirements for the language skills verified through the official language tests are as follows:

  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5
  • TOEFL iBT: 92
  • PTE (Academic): 62
  • C1 Advanced: 176
  • C2 Proficiency: 176

The English language test is not required from applicants who have successfully completed

  • secondary education or Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, or
  • a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in English in a Nordic country (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), or
  • studies in University of Eastern Finland (formerly University of Joensuu) as exchange students, or
  • International Baccalaureate with English as A1 language.

Ranking of applicants

All applicants will be assessed and placed in the rank order on the basis of the following criteria, each graded from 0 to 10:

  • earlier academic performance
  • motivation letter.

The candidates for scholarships are placed in the rank order on the basis of the criteria above.
