Majoring in Economics

The specialisation builds on a logically consistent structure, which relies on rational criteria for decision-making. Economics offers perspectives on essential features of all types of markets ranging from local retailers to global currency markets.
The Master’s studies consist of compulsory core courses in
  • microeconomics
  • macroeconomics
  • econometrics
  • specialised courses in other important fields of economics

The courses oriented towards microeconomics deal with

  • analysis of competition with a focus on how firms, organizations, and industries should be organised to achieve efficiency
  • analysis of corporate strategies to create sustainable competitive advantages and of asset markets characterized by incomplete information

Courses offered in macroeconomics focus on

  • economic policy
  • why we have structural unemployment and how it can be reduced
  • why monetary policy should be conducted by an independent central bank
  • which policy options are available to overcome the financial crisis

Courses and outline of studies

The extensive spectrum of high-quality courses offered is made possible through our close cooperation with our two partners within Helsinki Graduate School of Economics Helsinki GSE (formerly known as HECER, Helsinki Center of Economic Research). This collaboration means that you’ll be able to choose courses from both Aalto University School of Economics and the University of Helsinki.

As a student majoring in Economics you also have the opportunity to top up your degree with the QTEM certificate (Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management). ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. BACHELOR’S OR MASTER’S DEGREE FROM A RECOGNISED UNIVERSITY OR POLYTECHNIC

2. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • TOEFL  92 or
  • IELTS  6.5 or
  • PTE Academic  62 or
  • C2 Proficiency (previous name CPE): a minimum result of C1 (or C if taken when the test was called CPE
  • C1 Advanced: Grade C
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree conducted in English in: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States (only the specified countries)

3. AT LEAST 30 ECTS IN SUBJECTS RELEVANT FOR THE PROGRAMME SPECIALISATION/TRACK

4. GMAT OR GRE ADMISSION TEST/GPA REQUIREMENT

  • Group 1: Applicants applying based on a degree obtained in an EU/EEA country
    • GPA Grade B (US grading scale) in the degree based on which they are applying OR
    • GMAT/GRE sufficient test score (see below)
  • Group 2: Applicants applying based on a degree obtained in a country outside the EU/EEA
    • GMAT: a minimum overall test score of 550 OR
    • GRE: In Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning a test score of at least 150, in Analytical Writing; a test score of at least 3,5
