About the Programme

“The practice of film is to capture and convey human experience.”

The International MFA in Film is intended for you who work with the camera as a central tool in your own artistic practice.  Based on your own interests and themes, you will develop methods for artistic enquires in and through film. This is done through exploratory and reflective practical work together with teachers and other students in relation to society and contemporary life.

As a student, you will explore the range of expressions and possibilities that these of the camera embrace, both as an artistic tool and an area for social development.

About the programme

The programme is based on artistic practice and professional skills. It focuses on your own practice in combination with critical reflections on your own and others’ work in progress. You will practice presenting your own filmic work in various forms, not least in a public context.
The artistic and humanistic orientations permeate the programme as well as the importance of practising communication and visualisation in writing and moving images.

Film is one of four units at Valand Academy, which also includes Fine art, Photography and Literary composition. We work together in a dynamic interdisciplinary and artistic environment, where we develop our subjects, contribute to innovative working models and open up new artistic research fields. As a student, you will have the opportunity to also participate in elective courses in other subjects at the institution.

Continued studies and futures

The studies are based on an expanded view of the film field, where new professional roles and opportunities are emerging along with technological and societal developments. The aim of studies at Valand Academy is to develop methods for your own filmic practice, enable new filmic expressions and discover new public screening opportunities and areas of activity.

The programme gives you a sense of direction within the film field, where there are increasing opportunities for you to be able to profile yourself within the area. Professional contacts created through the school have often proven to be long-lasting and fruitful. You can also broaden your professional area to include educational assignments related to moving images. The programme provides a deeper understanding of your professional role as a filmmaker.

The studies aim to create incentives for artistic research and practical knowledge cultivation among the students. Valand Academy is a leader in practice-based PhDs for which this programme is preparatory. You will have access to the research culture of Valand. Our Faculty initiated PARSE – Platform for Artistic Research Sweden.

Content – the four semesters

The first semester aims at training the student’s ability to relate to and process existing visual material, where the focus is to raise the student’s level of awareness of ethical and aesthetic reasons for making selections. The teaching focuses on aspects of archives through lectures, seminars and practical exercises. The student locates and clarifies her/his own interest and theme, thereby identifying an artistic enquiry in the own filmic work.

During the second semester, the student explores his/her own filmic practice with respect to method, process and visualisation. Through group discussions, students exercise their critical ability in relation to their own and other students’ artistic work. The students practice placing their work in a context consisting of artistic research and practical knowledge cultivation with respect to reflected professional expertise, by participating in seminars and activities in the faculty’s research environment.

The third semester aims to challenge and develop the student’s artistic work and its relationship to the film field and its public areas. The teaching focuses on production methodology, organisation and work practice. During the course, the student completes a film project and prepare for its public screening as well as the surrounding event.

The fourth and final semester aims to broaden the student’s ability to manage and apply the individual’s artistic work in a conceptual and practical sense. Students will make their film project public and present it before an audience. Similarly, the student will present theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge in a reflective form and carry out a reflexive degree project by describing and analysing their own artistic process.

During the first academic year, the institution arranges a number of elective courses in various fields. By participating in elective courses, students from the institution’s various master’s programmes meet.
