Ageing of population in many societies will challenge health care systems and processes to produce health care services in more efficient ways. Digitalization of customer relationship management and services is a major change and driver for new services and processes. Master’s Programme in Health Business Management is customized for social and health care professionals as well as for business and engineering professionals who want to expand their expertise through improved management skills in this very key sector.
Innovative solutions and new business models are sought for to renew the sector: how to provide services economically and efficiently, yet maintain high quality and a human-oriented scope in all decisions and activities. Business and engineering graduates, as well as graduates from the field of health care and social services, will jointly tackle the various problem-solving situations and learning tasks.
The emphasize of the programme is in customer and in service business orientation and it has a multidisciplinary approach into business management. The programme provides a wide perspective to service business, competencies for team and project leadership and advancement in management skills.
The HBM Master’s students will be offered an environment to practice and enhance their international and communication skills in a very multicultural group of peers, staff and faculty. Lectures, seminars, workshops as well as learning materials and outputs are all in English.
The Master’s Degree Programme in Health Business Management consists of advanced professional studies (30 ECTS), alternative advanced professional studies (20 ECTS from a set of choices), elective studies (10 ECTS) and Master’s Thesis (30 ECTS). Students will gain a deep understanding of best practices for the health and social business concerning:
- Health Business Economics and Business Models
- Strategy, Management and Leadership
- Service Innovations and Design
- Quality and Safety Management
Alternative advanced studies can be picked from a set of choices, related to sustainable leadership, customer relations, or management accounting, all linked to health and social care organizations.
Sufficient RDI competence is provided at an early stage of the studies, as it is needed in planning and implementing a thesis development project in a real life business context, typically as an assignment from his or her own employer organization. The Master’s Thesis process starts early enough so that measurable changes or improvements can be identified.
Contact sessions are arranged in 3-6 days per month. When studying on a part-time basis, this degree can be obtained in 2 years. Studies takes time and organizational skill is needed.
Master’s Degree in Health Business Management qualifies for team and project leadership in health care services business and advancement towards management positions in private or public sector.
Applications shall be submitted online through a national system of joint application at opintopolku.fi / studyinfo.fi. The Master’s programme in Health Business Management is using a pre-assignment, which must be delivered to the entrance examination (in Helsinki).
Eligibility for a UAS Master’s degree programme is conferred by an appropriate UAS higher education degree or another appropriate higher education degree and at least three years of subsequent work experience in a relevant field. As a relevant field is regarded both the field being applied to and the field of the previous higher education degree.
Appropriate higher education degrees are:
- the Finnish Bachelor of Business Administration degree (tradenomi AMK); or
- some other appropriate Finnish higher education degree with minimum extent of 210 cr (ECTS) containing/combined with 40 cr (ECTS) of higher education studies in business field; or
- some other appropriate Finnish higher education degree combined a former Finnish “college level” degree (opisto- / ammatillisen korkea-asteen tutkinto) in the relevant field; or
- appropriate foreign higher education degree equivalent to the above mentioned Finnish higher education degrees in terms of level, extent and content (assessed by the degree programme).
In addition to the appropriate higher education degree, applicants must have 36 months (three years) of subsequent work experience in a relevant field accumulated as from the date of issue of the final higher education degree certificate and obtained no later than 31 July 2019. Universities of applied sciences also accept work experience obtained after completion of Finnish (must be completed in Finland) post-secondary or higher vocational level diploma (in any field of education) but prior to the date of issue of the final higher education degree certificate. In such cases, too, at least three years of work experience obtained in a relevant field is required.
Entrepreneurship will be accepted as work experience if an applicant can produce a certificate attesting that he or she is or has been covered under the statutory YEL or MYEL pension scheme. (YEL = statutory pension scheme for entrepreneurs; MYEL = statutory pension scheme for farmers, forest estate owners, fishers and reindeer herders and their family members). Enterprising activities abroad should be substantiated with comparable official documents.
Work experience is given in full months. When converting part-time work (work under 35 hours per week) into its full-time equivalent, 150 hours or 20 working days lasting at least 7 hours per day correspond to one month of work. Work experience does not have to be continuous or obtained with the same employer. The amount of work experience points awarded for simultaneous employment relationships may not exceed the amount awarded for full-time employment.
Military or non-military national service, women’s voluntary military service or child-care leave will not be counted towards work experience.
