INTERESTED IN DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS AND WORK IN EXPERT AND MANAGERIAL POSITIONS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HEALTH CARE?
A higher university of applied sciences degree produces the same competency for public offices and tasks as a higher academic degree.
The aim of the management studies is to prepare the students to take charge of a department or unit in a health or social care institution and run service processes. The management studies are free-choice electives and can consist of strategic management, management of people, and financial management. In addition, the students will examine the Finnish guidance and monitoring system used in the field of social sciences and health care.
The purpose of the Master’s thesis is to improve the skills necessary in
- project and
- development work.
The topic of the thesis should relate to the research and development projects conducted by the university or private and public sector businesses in Finland or in the student’s native country.
In the thesis, the student should apply existing scientific information and his/her prior research and development skills to the development processes carried out in working life.
These processes will provide the student with material to develop his/her discussion, conclusion making, reporting, and presentation skills.
STUDIES INDIVIDUALLY OR IN SMALL GROUPS
The studies in the degree programme provide the student with skills to participate in development projects and work in expert and managerial positions in the field of social sciences and health care. It is possible to combine the studies with one’s work and complete the degree programme within 2-3 years.
A large portion of the studies will be completed online individually or in small goups. The online studies require intensive online group work, advanced information retrieval skills and capabilities to collaboratively construct and apply information.
The online studies consist of, for example, lectures, individual or group assignments, online meetings, discussions and argumentations.
The real-time online connection also enables individual counseling. It is practically obligatory to have an individual web connection which will allow for independent distance learning.
The contact lessons will take place in predetermined days. The number of contact days per month for the first year is 3-5 and for the second year 2-3. The studies will be implemented in Kotka and Kouvola.
The health promotion study module aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to utilize epidemiological information when assessing the state of health of communities, and to further plan and organize interventions for different target groups. The theoretical models and methods of the health promotion are essential part of the core competencies.
A special focus is put on information retrieval and how it can be applied as a basis for making conclusions. The students will learn how welfare strategies are created, and how the various sectors within a municipality co-operate to promote health, and what role volunteer organizations play in health promotion.
From the perspective of health promotion, it is essential to focus on the prevention of diseases typical of Western societies and study the prevention projects carried out in Finland with relation to the population as a whole, smaller communities and, finally, individuals. Besides this, empowering and promoting well-being and health in the different age groups is essential.
