Why choose this programme?
This programme provides students with in-depth knowledge of the works of Henrik Ibsen and their cultural and historical context, as well as extensive training in relevant humanities research methods.
The program provides a unique opportunity to develop competencies in humanities research, critical thinking, and scholarly writing in a multicultural environment. The Centre attracts a highly diverse group of students from around the globe, and with widely different academic and professional backgrounds.
All courses are taught in English, but students may submit their written work, including qualifying papers, examinations and Master’s theses, in Norwegian.
The objectives of the programme are to provide the student with:
- in-depth knowledge of Ibsen’s works and their cultural and historical context
- training in relevant humanities research methodologies, including literary, historical, performance, film, and quantitative analyses
- familiarity with the reception and adaptation history of Ibsen’s works from a global, intercultural perspective
The programme provides training in multiple humanities research methodologies. It thus provides a solid foundation for further research in the humanities in general, and Ibsen Studies in particular, and also offers non-vocational training for teaching, performing and disseminating Ibsen’s works, including the field of cultural administration.
The library at The Centre for Ibsen Studies contains the most comprehensive collection of books and other materials on Ibsen in the world. Our librarians administer The International Ibsen Bibliography.
The Centre for Ibsen Studies aims to provide an exceptionally stimulating research environment for Master’s students through contact with professional scholars from around the world. In addition to four full-time and two part-time faculty members, the Centre regularly hosts international scholars and offers numerous seminars and lectures each year.
The programme welcomes applications from both Norwegian and foreign students.
