New products are introduced to the market daily and at an increasing speed to meet the increasing demands of customers.

As a result, the competition between manufacturers is also entering a new phase.

Since product development is considered as a transdisciplinary occupation these days, it needs to have an intensive knowledge in regard of manufacturing and design methods, design and production tools, ergonomics, aesthetic and sustainability. These skills help to have a fast response to the market demands and produce justifiable and usable products on a competitive market.

The Master’s Programme in Industrial Design Engineering is designed to provide students with knowledge of innovative design, manufacturing methods, human factors, creative problem solving, advanced materials, industrial and business challenges, and environmental considerations. Such skills are needed in different stages of product development to meet the needs of industries, support the product users, and to respond to the environmental aspects.

This Master’s Programme combines knowledge and working methods from production engineering, industrial design and material development. It emphasises a combination of engineering qualifications and design skills through project courses in which the students apply their knowledge to practice. The projects are carried out in close cooperation with industries.

The Master’s Programme in Industrial Design Engineering applies the principles of massive open online courses (MOOCs). It gives students the opportunity to complete nearly half of the courses in the form of distance learning. The online courses and specific internet based course exercises provide dynamic study atmosphere for students.

Intended learning outcomes

After completing this Master’s programme, will have acquired comprehensive knowledge related to production processes and designing products. The variety of such products could be from simple stationary product to a car as a sophisticated product.

As an industrial design engineer, you need to be able to cooperate with other discipline experts and provide the solution. This programme prepares you for having dynamic and strategically strong attitude to shape the future. For doing that you need to learn to see problems from multiple perspectives and to respond optimally through innovative solutions.

In this path, you will learn knowledge related to innovative design skills, manufacturing methods, human factors, and creative problem solving skills, advanced materials, industrial and business challenges and environmental consideration needed.

During this programme you will be prepared to take part actively in a multidisciplinary project work with other engineers, marketers, procurers, and project managers. You will acquire theoretical and methodological studies integrated in projects in cooperation with active companies in the region.

After completing this Master’s Programme you will have a proper skills in seeing the problems from multiple perspectives and find innovative solutions in relation to production processes, consumers products, interactions and processes. You will learn practical issues in design and production process in close collaboration with Finnish companies in applied projects.

You will be able to develop effectively and design new products and services in the global industrial scale. During your studies, you will gain related skills in concept visualisation, product development, technological and commercial perspectives. Finishing the master´s degree studies will give you deepened knowledge in modelling and visualisation in 3D CAD systems.

You will:

  • learn practical skills in communication, collaboration and presentation in an actual project,
  • be able to identify and solve the problems through design a product or service based on the related studies on consumers, producers and products,
  • be able to identify and apply experiences on how industrial design considering the technological and economic situation lead to create a successful product or a service,
  • be able to plan, lead and organise the research project according to the established scientific practices, procedures, write and present a scientific research plan and research report,
  • have a good understanding about product range manufactured with various methods can solve real-life problems related to high performance products,
  • be able to recognise and compare different production methods using diverse set of materials including sheet metal, composites and wood and be able to understand related 3D design software and assemblies, and 3D software simulation,
  • be able to understand the role of ergonomic design on human performance and conditions in everyday work and life,
  • be able to understand the meaning of material selection and design for manufacturing of products and sustainability viewpoints,
  • learn wide range of theories, methods, design and manufacturing skills and related tools to apply in different set of problem solving and product development scenarios,
  • understand influence and importance of the package design, consumer behavior, development trends and value addition through utilising new techniques,
  • be able to individually formulating the problems criteria and setting connections with other research groups and Finnish industry,
  • be able to apply and develop systematic and analytical means and tools of systematic material selection approaches into solving cross-technological material selection tasks,
  • be able to define and analyse the properties, strengths, weaknesses and application areas of the main groups of constructional materials for different types of applications. Students also will be able to evaluate and utilise recent results and documents of material science and derive analytical models based on the principles of LCC’s, LCA’s and MIPS-factors in material selection,
  • be familiarised with different technologies of additive manufacturing and be able to select suitable processes for different applications as well as product design for additive manufacturing. You will also be familiar with the possibilities of additive manufacturing in product development, prototyping and part manufacturing,

gain a comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing as an essential part of the production process.

The Master’s programme in Industrial Design Engineering is a two-year programme. It leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 120 ECTS credits.

LUT University will arrange this programme on its Lahti campus. Certain lectures and tutorials will also take place on the Lappeenranta campus.

This programme is also well suited for people already in the working world in Finland and abroad.

The programme includes core studies and specialisation studies.

Core studies (32 ECTS credits) deal with research methods, structural materials, engineering mathematics, 3D printing, and fibre materials.

Specialisation studies (88 ECTS credits) include topics such as package design and package manufacturing, sheet metal production, sustainable design engineering, joining technology, design and manufacturing processes, the design and manufacturability of metal products, visualisation, and creativity in design.

The Master’s thesis and seminar, 30 ECTS credits, is a part of the specialisation studies. The thesis is an advanced research project which requires approximately six months of full-time work. Students complete it during their fourth semester.

  • Bachelor of Science in Technology 
    Tekniikan kandidaatti
    Completed in a University
    Having completed a degree Diplomi-insinööri (DI) still makes you eligible to apply, but only when applying with the degree Tekniikan kandidaatti. 
    EXCEPTION: Degree DI accepted if completed before 2008 before no separate Bachelor’s Degrees existed.
    NOTE: You are ineligible to apply, if having completed a degree DI in a study programme in the same field of study compared to the programme you are applying to.
  • Bachelor of Engineering
    Insinööri (AMK)
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences

    Having completed a degree Insinööri (YAMK) still makes you eligible to apply, but only when applying with the degree Insinööri (AMK).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a field other than Technology
    Completed in a University
  • Master’s Degree in a field other than Engineering
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences

Degrees Completed Worldwide (excluding Finland)

  • Bachelor of Science in Technology OR closely related to Technology – All countries
    Completed in a University

Both the above mentioned degrees have to meet with the following criteria:

  • The degree must be equivalent to a similar Finnish Bachelor’s Degree regarding to number of academic years and ECTS credits required.
  • The degree must give you eligibility to apply to university level Master’s studies in the country where the degree was completed in.
  • Having completed a Master’s Degree still makes you eligible to apply, but only when applying with a Bachelor’s Degree.
    • Exception: Master’s Degree with no immediate prior Bachelor’s Degree included is accepted.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Industrial Design – All countries
    Completed in a University

 

Requirements for the Degree Awarding University

The university awarding you the degree that you are applying with must be an official and recognized part of the national education system and has to be listed on the World Higher Education Database WHED by International Association of Universities.

 

Possibility to Apply as Undergraduate

You are eligible to apply as undergraduate and if admitted, you must

  • Complete your degree by July 31, 2019
  • Mail an officially certified copy of your Degree Certificate and Transcript of Records together with the official translations (if applicable), to LUT Admissions Services in a way that they are received by August 5, 2019 at 15:00 (GMT +2)
    • Degrees completed in certain countries require you to follow the country-specific document requirements for authenticating and/or delivering your educational documents.
    • Prepare yourself for a long period of time required for the authentication process before being able to mail us the documents.

 

Requirements for Proficiency in English

Accepted Language Tests

One of the following language tests in English with at least the minimum score mentioned is required for you to prove your proficiency in English:

NOTE: A Language Certificate issued by your home university or any other institution or organisation is not accepted.

When a Language Test Result is Not Required?

Validity for the Language Test

Your language test result has to be valid at least on the first day of the application period i.e. on December 3, 2018. If not, you are required to take a new language test as you will not be eligible to apply with an expired language test result.

All the language test results accepted by LUT are valid for two years from the date of taking the test.

 

Minimum Requirement for GPA

The GPA for the degree providing you with the eligibility to apply must be

  • a minimum of 2.50 on the scale of 1.00-5.00
