A new one-year master’s programme in opera, vocal performance has been developed. The new one-year programme will replace the two-year programme from the academic year of 2019/2020.
As a student on the two-year Master’s programme your independence and ability to identify your knowledge needs are crucial. During your studies you develop your artistry as an opera singer by actively seeking out new knowledge and deepening your skills. This takes place on the courses offered by the programme, but your opportunity to take responsibility for seeking knowledge is crucial and will affect the content of your programme.

The programme is designed to enhance your reflective skills, put you in contact with research and development in the field of opera and boost your knowledge of how you can actively manage your artistry in a changeable society. The programme also includes an emphasis on modern opera and the development of opera as an art form in a societal and international perspective.

Applicants should have very good vocal technique, strong musical-dramatic skills and an expressive drive. The studies require applicants to have thorough knowledge of music theory and basic knowledge of Italian and German lyrical diction.

Master’s Programme in Opera with a Specialisation in Vocal Performance (two-years)

The Master’s programme endeavours to develop your technique and deepen your artistic skills as an opera singer. Through courses in artistic reflection, you focus on and develop your practical work from an artistic and societal perspective. The course in artistic entrepreneurship strengthens your ability to run your career and take responsibility for yourself as an opera singer during and after your studies.

The programme consists of two years’ full-time studies and its courses include the following:

  • Opera interpretation

This course title encompasses a range of subjects including vocal performance, musical interpretation and musical-dramatic interpretation for the stage. The tuition takes place individually and in groups, and the results are presented internally or to an audience. Students have access to language coaching and movement training as required.

  • Artistic reflection

On courses and in seminars students develop their ability to reflect on their own artistry and how it interacts with and is affected by a changeable world. The course also encompasses artistic research and the development of opera as an art form through focused seminars concerning artistic research – particularly within opera.

  • Artistic entrepreneurship

On this course each student prepares and completes their own artistic project. Sometimes it is also realised in practice. Students explore their entrepreneurial skills and practise tackling personal and organisational obstacles to the implementation of their projects.

  • Seminars about opera as an art form, and opera of today and tomorrow
  • Approaching audiences and giving concerts and performances
