Introduction to the programme
Master’s Degree Programme in Photonics is a two-year programme taught in English at the Institute of Photonics, University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu, Finland. Master’s degree in Photonics offers outstanding skills needed in international careers in optics, photonics, and related fields. The programme covers all important aspects from theory to practical work in laboratories with world-class facilities. The education is based on high-quality photonics research in the department. Our graduates find work as technology specialists, researchers, and project managers in the development organisations and R&D departments of photonics industry.
A generous scholarship scheme is offered to those students who are required to pay tuition.

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Photonics is a two year full time study program. Master’s degree consists of 120 ECTS credits of studies in one main subject, photonics. One ECTS credit corresponds to 25-30 hours of work.
The objective of Master’s degree in photonics is to give students good expertise to modern optics and photonics at both theoretical and experimental level. This contains the ability to understand optical phenomena, design and analysis of optical systems, fabrication methods of photonics structures, and ability to scientific and technical communication in photonics. This all gives the capability to work in photonics related companies as an expert and developer-, and to continue to PhD studies in photonics. The education is based on high-quality photonics research in the department.

STUDIES CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING MODULES:
- General studies form the basis for the further studies.
- Core courses provide the fundamental basis for light and light-matter interaction.
- Laboratory practices contain a large amount of practical working in photonics.
- Waves and scattering consist of advanced topics on modern light propagation and scattering.
- Light and Matter inspect light-matter interaction at microscopic level.
- Displays, Colors, and Applications introduce some special topics on optics.
- Master thesis is your own large project.
Double degree program
Students in the Master’s degree programme in Photonics at UEF may apply to a Double Master’s Degree Program in «Advanced Materials and Technologies of Photonics» for the second study year. This double degree programme is organized together with UEF and ITMO University in St. Petersburg, Russia. After completing all the requirements for graduation at each institution, the student will be granted official Master’s Degree Diplomas/Certificates by both universities. A previous Bachelor’s degree* corresponding to at least 3 year’s of full time academic studies from an institution for higher education is required from all Master’s degree applicants. The degree should entitle the applicant to apply to Master’s studies in the country where the degree has been awarded.
*Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in physics, optics, photonics, physical and engineering sciences with an extensive physics basic education, or another discipline related to the programme, entailing proficiency in physics and mathematics.
An applicant who has not graduated by the end of the application period but has enough studies of the suitable field of science entailing proficiency in physics and mathematics, can be chosen to the programme conditionally. Applicant must complete the Bachelor’s studies by 9.8.2019.
An applicant accepted conditionally, must deliver a copy of the original Bachelor diploma or equivalent including a grade and an official and certified English translation (a notarized copy) of the diploma including a grade no later than 9.8.2019 to the programme coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org ), otherwise the conditional study place will be lost.
Applicants must demonstrate excellent skills of English language. English language proficiency can be proven with official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), C1 Advanced (formerly known as CAE) and C2 Proficiency (formerly known as CPE) or Pearson Test of English (PTE) test score report.
English language test organized by the Foreign Language Center of ITMO University is accepted only for the applicants from ITMO university double degree programme in Photonics (ITMO-UEF).

- English language test organized by the Foreign Language Center of ITMO University: 6.5 (overall).
The English language test is not required for applicants who have completed their Bachelor’s or Master’s studies in English (If the applicant has conducted his/her bachelor’s or Master’s studies in English, he/she must include the statement of his/her institution stating that the medium of the instruction of the applicant’s university is English)
who have conducted their secondary education in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or United States
who have taken the matriculation examination in English language in Finland with minimum grade Magna Cum Laude Approbatur.
It is up to the applicants to take the test in time. It should be noted that it may take several weeks before the test results are available.
