About the programme
The Nordic Master in Public Administration, Leadership, and Digitalization is a highly researched focused programme, where students get a high degree of flexibility during its course. Students will gain knowledge, skills, and competencies that in areas of public administration, public finance and budgeting, and governance. The Nordic welfare models is highly integrated throughout the programme, together with a distinct perspective on how public sector organizations are affected by and adjusts to processes of digitalization. The programme’s interdisciplinary approach aims to educate and train the next generation of professionals, within academia as PhD students or as civil servants in public sector organizations, with specific focus on efficient and effective use of public resources.
The Nordic Master in Public Administration, Leadership, and Digitalization is a joint programme between three different universities; University of Gothenburg, NORD University in Bodø (Norway), and Åbo Akademi University (Finland). The programme is based in ideas about mobilization, meaning that students will be expected to partake in course work at two (or preferably three) of these three universities during the course of the programme. Courses are taught and led by active and established researchers within their fields.
Students accepted to the Nordic Master in Public Administration, Leadership, and Digitalization programme will be given the opportunity to partake in a wide array of different courses, at three different universities, ensuring a highly flexible education. Each student will, in collaboration with student counselling, identify which courses that are most suitable to reach and fulfil their individual career goals.
The mandatory master thesis (during the fourth semester) will be supervised by two supervisors at two of the collaborating universities. In order to validate the research quality, each thesis will be examined by a thesis committee. The thesis committee will consist of at least three experienced and senior researchers from the three universities.
The Nordic Master in Public Administration, Leadership, and Digitalization is available for students that has a bachelor degree of at least 180 ECTS within the social sciences education or equivalent. Students should be well versed in communicating in English, written as well as spoken, in order to gain the most of the education.
The Nordic Master in Public Administration, Leadership, and Digitalization programme is suitable for students with a study background within the social sciences, especially within public administration, public policy, business administration, or social work. The programme is also suitable for (active) practitioners that wishes to advance their current education level with a double degree, e.g. individuals active in so called street-level bureaucracy or front-line professional work such as education, social work, or law enforcement. Candidates of the Nordic Master in Public Administration, Leadership, and Digitalization programme will be well prepared for a large variety of highly qualified professional work.
The Nordic Master in Public Administration, Leadership, and Digitalization programme is well suited for candidates that want to pursue an academic career through an application to PhD-programme at one of the universities. The flexibility of the programme structure, enables students to obtain a valuable and individually relevant master education of high quality. All candidates are encouraged to seek a PhD-position after completion of the programme.
Requirements and Selection
REQUIREMENTS: The applicant must have obtained a bachelor’s degree of at least 180 ECTS in the social sciences education field or equivalent Swedish or foreign degree, including at least 15 ECTS in research methods. Applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in English at the level of at least English 6 / English B or equivalent at an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL or IELTS. The applicant will be asked to submit a letter of motivation with an account of academic background and work experience as well as a reflection on how the program will advance their stated career goals.
