About the Programme
Software is the main driving force for innovation and development in many kinds of industries, for example, in automotive, telecom, defense, government, bank, retail, education, and the software industry itself. Consequently, the importance of software in the society is increasing. The increased utilization of software also increases size and complexity of software, alongside pressure of quicker time to market in rapidly changing environments and demands. To meet the challenges of delivering reliable and high quality software at high speed in changing environments, the Software Engineering Master’s program offers a unique combination of advanced technical knowledge and management skills.
The programme is designed with a set of compulsory courses that provides a solid foundation in the central areas of software engineering. The elective courses in the programme, in total 75 credits together with the master thesis work, enables students to specialize their education into a profile of their choice. Examples of recommended specializations are within software architecture, product and process management, software and communication, software modeling, software strategy and leadership, and software and user experience.
The first term is dedicated to build competences in recognizing and developing customer value through requirements engineering along with software quality, project management, and scientific approaches. These skills form a solid base for students to actively engage in software development projects later in the programme. As the industry and society requires modern advanced software engineering methods, students will learn how to identify the best available methods and tools, get knowledgeable about the industrial field of software engineering, and practice group research activities. These are all highly relevant skills for software engineers in future software innovation and development.
The second term is semi-elective, in which the student selects a minimum of 15 credits from listed courses and combines with 15 credits of optional courses. The listed courses includes courses in recommended specializations and spans from advanced concepts within software such as architecture, agile processes, model-driven engineering, to complementary subjects such as strategy and leadership, communication, and user experience.
In the third term, the student engages in a real project that aims to synthesizing and applying their knowledge from previous courses and make a concrete contribution to existing software. The third term also provides additional possibility to specialize their education into a profile of their choice, or to extend his or her knowledge by choosing among several elective courses within the area of applied Information Technology, Computer Science, or Information systems. The chosen specializations or extended areas are further developed in the master thesis work that follows in the final term.
Requirements and Selection
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree 180 credits including an independent project (degree project) of at least 15 credits or equivalent within the field of Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or equivalent. Knowledge in programming, with the minimum of: 7.5 credits in programming, 4.5 credits in object-oriented design, 7.5 credits in algorithms and data structures, and 15 credits in practical projects are required. Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English 6/English B from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.
SELECTION: Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 225 credits.
