Global supply networks and supply chains around the world are essential part of today’s business.

Extracting competitiveness and increasing sustainability for a company from its supply networks and chains requires special skills, competencies and tools for exploring and managing global supply networks.

Supply management is a unique Master’s programme in Finland providing expertise of strategic supply and supplier management. The programme is designed to correspond to the growing needs of today’s business life in terms of educating open-minded, innovative managers in the fields of supply management and purchasing.

Supply management is a cross-functional activity of a firm requiring a broad understanding of international business. Your studies will integrate disciplines of strategic management, international business and relationship management in supply networks.

In this programme you will focus on supply strategies, global challenges of sourcing and development of purchasing and supply chains.

Your studies will aggregate theories and concepts of business and technology and present recent applications and methods in the field, thus promoting your problem solving, decision making and analytical skills. You will gain specialised knowledge about the elements of supply strategies and factors of interaction in supply networks.

The studies include interactive case studies, company assignments, group work, independent exercises, literature studies and lectures. About 95% of the programme’s Master’s theses are based on real-life business problems and are prepared for companies or public sector organisations.

The MSM programme also offers students a possibility for double degree studies at the University of Twente, the Netherlands.

Intended learning outcomes

As an MSM graduate, you will have an integrative approach to different business disciplines and functions of a firm and will be able to analyse and solve complex business problems arising in the field of supply management.

You will be an expert in the field of supply management. You will have strong analytical skills and will be able to apply tools required for professional practices to manage supply chains and supplier relationships.

Degree structures and studies

The Master’s Programme in Supply Management is a two-year programme. It leads to the degree of Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration, M. Sc. (Econ. & Bus. Adm.), which is 120 ECTS credits.

The studies connect two perspectives: the internal viewpoint of organising and aligning supply management according to the firm’s strategy, and the external viewpoint consisting of supplier relationships and supply network management.

The programme includes core studies, specialisation studies, minor studies and language studies.

Core studies (42  ECTS credits) include courses on strategic supply management and supply chain financing, sustainable global sourcing, supplier relationship management and service business.

Specialisation studies (48 ECTS credits) ) include courses on topics concerning risk management and supply chain improvement, and external resource management.

Minor studies (minimum 24 ECTS credits) include courses on either international marketing, knowledge and innovation management, entrepreneurship, sustainability, or business analytics.

Language studies, 6 ECTS credits.

The Master’s thesis and seminar, 30 ECTS credits, is a part of specialisation studies. The thesis is an advanced research project, which requires approximately six months of full-time work. It is completed during the fourth semester of the degree programme.

Double degree studies for LUT degree students

The MSM programme also offers students a possibility for double degree studies.

The MSM double degree partner university is University of Twente, the Netherlands.

Students admitted to complete the Master’s degree in the MSM programme at LUT are eligible to apply to the double degree programme.

Students admitted to the double degree programme receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities.

Double degree studies for students from partner universities

Students from partner universities are able to study as a double degree student at LUT.

MSM’s double degree partner universities are:

  • University of Twente, the Netherlands
  • Higher School of Economics, Russia

Students admitted to the double degree programme receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities.

Many career opportunities will open up to you. You can find specialist and management positions in both the public and private sectors, as well as in global and local companies in the fields of supply management, international business, logistics, supply chain management and consulting.

Examples of such positions include global sourcing director, supply manager, category manager and strategic buyer.

  • Bachelor of Science in Economics or Business Administration

    Completed in a University
    Having already completed a degree Kauppatieteiden maisteri at the time of applying or, completing it before starting the LUT Master’s studies makes you ineligible to apply.
  • Bachelor of Business Administration
    Tradenomi (AMK)
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences
  • Master of Business Administration
    Tradenomi (YAMK)
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences

    • Previous degree completed: Tradenomi (AMK)
      > You are required to apply with the degree Tradenomi (AMK).
    • Previous degree completed: Bachelor’s Degree (AMK) in a field other than Business Administration
      > You are required to apply with the previous Bachelor’s Degree (AMK).
      Copy for the Degree Certificate for Tradenomi (YAMK) to be included in the application documents to get exempted from taking the GMAT Test or GRE General Test. 
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Supply Management, Supply Chain Management or Logistics  
    Insinööri (AMK)
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences
    Having completed a degree Insinööri (YAMK) still makes you eligible to apply, but only when applying with the degree Insinööri (AMK).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a field other than Business Administration
    Completed in a University
    A minimum of 24 ECTS credits of programme-specific studies required.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a field other than Business Administration
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences
    GMAT Test or GRE General Test with minimum required score/s required. Further information at Required Documents > GMAT and GRE General Tests.

Degrees Completed Worldwide (excluding Finland)

  • Bachelor of Science in Economics or Business Administration – All countries
    Completed in a University
    Having already completed a Master’s Degree in Economics/BA at the time of applying or, completing it before starting the LUT Master’s studies makes you ineligible to apply.
  • Bachelor of Business Administration – EU/EEA countries
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences
    Having completed a Master’s Degree in BA still makes you eligible to apply, but only when applying with a Bachelor’s Degree.
     

    Both the above mentioned degrees have to meet with the following criteria:

    • The degree must be equivalent to a similar Finnish Bachelor’s Degree regarding to number of academic years and ECTS credits required.
    • The degree must give you eligibility to apply to university level Master’s studies in the country where the degree was completed in.
    • A minimum of 80 ECTS credits of studies in Business Administration to be included in the degree.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a field other than Business Administration – All countries
    Completed in a University
    GMAT Test or GRE General Test with minimum required score/s required. Further information at Required Documents > GMAT and GRE General Tests.

NOTE: The Admissions Committee for the programme reserves a right to decide whether the degree and the completed studies provide the applicant with eligibility to apply to the programme.

 

Requirements for the Degree Awarding University

The university awarding you the degree that you are applying with must be an official and recognized part of the national education system and has to be listed on the World Higher Education Database WHED by International Association of Universities.

 

Possibility to Apply as Undergraduate

You are eligible to apply as undergraduate and if admitted, you must

  • Complete your degree by July 31, 2019
  • Mail an officially certified copy of your Degree Certificate and Transcript of Records together with the official translations (if applicable), to LUT Admissions Services in a way that they are received by August 5, 2019 at 15:00 (GMT +2)
    • Degrees completed in certain countries require you to follow the country-specific document requirements for authenticating and/or delivering your educational documents.
    • Prepare yourself for a long period of time required for the authentication process before being able to mail us the documents.

 

Requirements for Proficiency in English

Accepted Language Tests

One of the following language tests in English with at least the minimum score mentioned is required for you to prove your proficiency in English:

NOTE: A Language Certificate issued by your home university or any other institution or organisation is not accepted.

When a Language Test Result is Not Required?

Validity for the Language Test

Your language test result has to be valid at least on the first day of the application period i.e. on December 3, 2018. If not, you are required to take a new language test as you will not be eligible to apply with an expired language test result.

All the language test results accepted by LUT are valid for two years from the date of taking the test.

 

Minimum Requirement for Programme-Specific Studies

To possibly get admitted, you must have completed

  • a minimum of 24 ECTS credits of studies in Supply Management, Management, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Marketing or International Business
