Internationally, cities pose a significant challenge to sustainable transition, both environmentally, socially and economically. In the future, up to 70-80% of the world population will live in cities, and thus it is important to handle the challenges they pose. It is essential that planning is done by developing systemic and integrated approaches, like energy, mobility, water, waste, etc. Thus, it is necessary to be able to think across sectors, analyse consequences in multiple areas and include stakeholders such as government, citizens, companies and environmental organisations.

The Master of Science Programme in Sustainable Cities at Aalborg University Copenhagen aims to teach students about how we can achieve the sustainable transition of cities. This is done by first providing in-depth understanding of the four main infrastructural domains of cities: 1) resources (waste) 2) energy, 3) water and climate change and 4) transport and mobility. Second, by considering the political and economic conditions influencing the development of these domains, the synergies across them and how to assess the environmental, social and economic impacts of city development.

This program helps you understand the challenges and opportunities for cities to create sustainable futures. In the process you learn how to address key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards 2030 from the United Nations as well as issues being addressed by global organisations such as the Covenant of Mayors, C40 etc.

Graduates from this Master of Science program have the knowledge and skills needed to create framework for the Sustainable Cities of the future, integrating economic, social, technical and environmental considerations in new ways. Understanding the technical aspects of the sustainable engineering solutions, and the political and economic conditions, the Sustainable Cities engineer can play an important role in as a sustainable city planner.

 

APPLICATION AND REQUIREMENTS

 

To enter this master programme you must have a relevant bachelor degree. The bachelor in Urban, Energy and Environmental Planning at Aalborg University gives you direct access to the programme. Other relevant bachelor degrees could be within engineering or geography. However, all applications for the master programme are evaluated individually and the relevancy of the bachelor degree is evaluated through this process.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

You can study as a guest student on the first or second semester or as a master student following the entire two-year degree programme.
Students seeking to enrol in the programme are required to have the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor of science degree in engineering, geography or natural sciences.

All applications are evaluated individually. A background within Architectural Technology and Construction Management does not in itself qualify for admission to Sustainable Cities.
