The MSc programme in Sustainable Energy aims to provide you with qualifications in energy systems with a specialization in one of the sustainable energy technologies.

In the coming decades, global energy systems will undergo major changes, and their sustainability will prove to be of the utmost importance—environmentally, economically, and socially. DTU is at the cutting edge in Europe when it comes to research in sustainable energy.

Study programme focus

During the course of study, you will acquire extensive expertise on various energy technologies and systems with focus on sustainability.

The first semester consists of three courses covering the main aspects of sustainable energy systems:

  • energy economics, markets, and policies;
  • modelling and analysis of sustainable energy systems using operations research;
  • energy and sustainability.

Within this framework, you can choose between the eight study lines below.

The first semester offers general system and method courses, while the second semester takes a closer look at specific sustainable energy technologies, allowing you to concentrate on theoretical subjects in each area of technology and to choose more laboratory and application-oriented courses. The aim is to provide you with special technological knowledge, while also ensuring that your gain an understanding of the regulatory framework relevant to the application of the knowledge when performing development and implementation tasks in a company.

During the course of study, it is highly recommended that you spend a semester abroad (preferably second semester) at a university offering courses in either specific energy technologies or the more system-oriented aspects of sustainable energy.

Solar energy:

General admission requirements

Only applicants holding either a relevant Bachelor of Science in Engineering, a Bachelor in Engineering or a Bachelor of Natural Science degree can be admitted to a Master of Science in Engineering programme. The bachelor degree must be less than 10 years old.

The individual MSc Eng programme states in detail which bachelor programmes qualify and whether applicants have to complete supplementary educational activities.

Requirements for supplementary educational activities can equate to up to 30 ECTS credits and are specified in the form of a list of courses under the individual MSc Eng programmes.

The specific requirements must be met before graduating from the bachelor programme or in connection with conditional admission to a particular MSc Eng programme. The courses must be passed prior to the commencement of studies within one year from the conditional admission.

Supplementary educational activities in connection with conditional admission to an MSc Eng programme do not form part of the MSc Eng programme, and partial tuition fees are charged. If the supplementary courses have not been passed within the deadlines specified, the conditional admission to the programme is withdrawn.

The Master of Science in Engineering programmes are offered in English. Therefore applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English (B-level, IELTS, TOEFL- or Pearson test).
