To develop more sustainable societies, we need to understand betterhow to respond to environmental, social and economic challenges and transform industrial behaviour.

Modern engineering design can be implemented by hundreds of different manufacturing techniques, which are the last links of the value chain before the product is released to the customer. The optimal order-delivery chain and profitable business can be guaranteed by choosing the appropriate manufacturing techniques together with professional usage of them.

The manufacturing industry faces new challenges as customers’ needs change due to increasing awareness of sustainable manufacturing methods and the development of new advanced materials. In this programme, you will acquire skills and knowledge, required to reform the manufacturing industry and to increase its competitiveness through sustainable production design.

During your studies, you will learn to see the possibilities and restrictions of sustainable production. You will develop skills, enabling you to participate in demanding global development tasks of product and production design. You will be able to analyse challenging production tasks also by using simulation software.

You will acquire skills in the most common manufacturing techniques and their future vision. You will be familiarised with both traditional manufacturing of metal constructions and modern production which utilises new fibre and composite based materials. Course topics will cover a wide range of production industry from food packaging to vehicle and civil industry.

All sessions of the programme will be available online. You will be able to participate in the programme according to the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) principle.

Intended learning outcomes

After completing this Master’s programme, you will be ready to engage in modern, world-class manufacturing for a sustainable future.

You will be able to work in teams and handle the interaction between product development, production, materials technology, design, construction, energy and process technology, and operational techniques.

Degree structure and studies

The Master’s programme in Sustainable Production in Mechanical Engineering is a two-year programme. It leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, M. Sc. (Tech.), which is 120 ECTS credits.

The programme includes core and specialisation studies.

Core studies (35 ECTS credits) include topics on research methods, structural materials, industrial manufacturing processes, reliability engineering design, management and leadership skills.

Specialisation studies (85 ECTS credits) include topics on integration of production and product design, sustainable production and material selection, packaging technology, advanced welding processes, sustainable welding production, laser prosessing and 3D-printing and production controlling technologies and methods.

The Master’s thesis and seminar, 30 ECTS credits, is a part of specialisation studies. The thesis an advanced research project, which requires approximately six months of full-time work. It is completed during the fourth semester of the degree programme.

Career prospects

Manufacturing engineers play important roles in delivering innovations that take our world forward.

You will acquire the knowledge and skills to work in different fields of the manufacturing industry, most typically in research, development, and innovation functions of mechanical engineering companies and equipment manufacturers.

Other prospective positions include overseeing the construction of new factories, systems or processes, the import and sales of machinery, and supervising, teaching and testing positions.

You may find placement in mechanical engineering, machine and device import, inspecting and testing industries, or education and research organisations. Graduates of this programme have found placement in companies like Outotec, UPM, Stora Enso, Metso, Wärtsilä, Kone, Konecranes, ABB, and VTT.

Additionally, the skills of manufacturing engineers are increasingly in demand beyond the traditional mechanical engineering industry.

You will also acquire a firm basis to continue your studies in doctoral programmes.

Requirements for the Completed Degree

Degrees Completed in Finland

  • Bachelor of Science in Technology 
    Tekniikan kandidaatti
    Completed in a Univeristy
    Having completed a degree Diplomi-insinööri (DI) still makes you eligible to apply, but only when applying with the degree Tekniikan kandidaatti. 
    EXCEPTION: Degree DI accepted if completed before 2008 before no separate Bachelor’s Degrees existed.
    NOTE: You are ineligible to apply, if having completed a degree DI in a study programme in the same field of study compared to the programme you are applying to.
  • Bachelor of Engineering
    Insinööri (AMK)
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences

    Having completed a degree Insinööri (YAMK) still makes you eligible to apply, but only when applying with the degree Insinööri (AMK).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a field other than Technology
    Completed in a University
  • Master’s Degree in a field other than Engineering
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences

Degrees Completed Worldwide (excluding Finland)

  • Bachelor of Science in Technology OR closely related to Technology – All countries
    Completed in a University
  • Bachelor of Engineering – EU/EEA countries
    Completed in a University of Applied Sciences

    Both the above mentioned degrees have to meet with the following criteria:

    • The degree must be equivalent to a similar Finnish Bachelor’s Degree regarding to number of academic years and ECTS credits required.
    • The degree must give you eligibility to apply to university level Master’s studies in the country where the degree was completed in.
    • Having completed a Master’s Degree still makes you eligible to apply, but only when applying with a Bachelor’s Degree.
      • Exception: Master’s Degree with no immediate prior Bachelor’s Degree included is accepted.

NOTE: The Admissions Committee for the programme reserves a right to decide whether the degree and the completed studies provide the applicant with eligibility to apply to the programme.

Requirements for the Degree Awarding University

The university awarding you the degree that you are applying with must be an official and recognized part of the national education system and has to be listed on the World Higher Education Database WHED by International Association of Universities.

Possibility to Apply as Undergraduate

You are eligible to apply as undergraduate and if admitted, you must

  • Complete your degree by July 31, 2019
  • Mail an officially certified copy of your Degree Certificate and Transcript of Records together with the official translations (if applicable), to LUT Admissions Services in a way that they are received by August 5, 2019 at 15:00 (GMT +2)
    • Degrees completed in certain countries require you to follow the country-specific document requirements for authenticating and/or delivering your educational documents.
    • Prepare yourself for a long period of time required for the authentication process before being able to mail us the documents.

Requirements for Proficiency in English

Accepted Language Tests

One of the following language tests in English with at least the minimum score mentioned is required for you to prove your proficiency in English:

NOTE: A Language Certificate issued by your home university or any other institution or organisation is not accepted.

When a Language Test Result is Not Required?

Validity for the Language Test

Your language test result has to be valid at least on the first day of the application period i.e. on December 3, 2018. If not, you are required to take a new language test as you will not be eligible to apply with an expired language test result.

All the language test results accepted by LUT are valid for two years from the date of taking the test.

Minimum Requirement for GPA

The GPA for the degree providing you with the eligibility to apply must be

  • a minimum of 2.50 on the scale of 1.00-5.00
